Vehicles Under 25 Years Old

Many assume that every vehicle less than 25 years old are completely unavailable to American buyers. The reality is more complicated.

The federal 25-year exemption applies to vehicles being imported into the United States as complete motor vehicles. A vehicle younger than 25 years old does not automatically qualify simply because it shares a platform or components with a US-market model.

However, depending on the particular vehicle, the intended project and the import structure, specialised options may be available.

Our experience is primarily with Holden VE and VF Utes and Wagons, along with Australian vehicles related to US-market models such as the:

• Pontiac GTO
• Pontiac G8
• Chevrolet Caprice PPV
• Chevrolet SS

These vehicles share significant engineering, architecture and components with models sold in the United States. The Holden-developed Zeta platform was designed for both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive applications and underpinned several Australian and American GM vehicles.

This shared engineering makes these vehicles particularly attractive for conversions, donor builds and specialist projects, but it does not create an automatic exemption from federal import requirements.

How Our Under-25 Service Works

Our under-25 service is a specialised brokerage and project-coordination service revolving around body-shells and incomplete vehicles used for conversion and finishing once in the USA.

Depending on the vehicle and chosen pathway, the vehicle may need to be dismantled in Australia and exported as individual parts through separately arranged shipments. Each consignment is documented and shipped according to its contents and must not constitute an assembled motor vehicle in-order to be federally legal.

The parts are not represented or imported as a complete, road-ready vehicle.

Because every project is different, we assess the vehicle, component groupings, shipping arrangements and available documentation before confirming whether we can assist.

To estimate your total cost, add 15% to the seller’s listed AUD price of the vehicle and then convert the sum to USD (for example, by searching “5000 AUD to USD” on Google). Make sure not to include dollar signs (“$”) in your search, as this can cause the results to change.

Can you deliver the vehicle to my home in the United States?

Where available, a third-party logistics provider can quote for onward transport from the US arrival warehouse to your location.

This is a separate service unless specifically included in your written quote.

Can every vehicle under 25 years old be imported?

No. Every under-25 project must be assessed individually.

A vehicle sharing a platform with a US-market model does not automatically make it eligible for import as a complete motor vehicle. The available options depend on the exact vehicle, intended project, import structure and applicable requirements.
